Employment Service: The Number of Unemployed in Slovenia Decreases by Almost 6% Compared to the Same Period Last Year

According to the Employment Service, at the end of September 2019, 69,834 unemployed were officially registered in the country, which is 2.4% less than in August 2019, and 5.3% less than in September 2018. A record low unemployment rate in the country’s history was registered in September 2008 and made 59,303 people. Since the end of that period and until the end of September 2019, the number of unemployed for the first time amounted to less than 70 thousand people.

In September 2019, 5,752 people were recorded in the register of the Employment Service: 2,917 persons – due to the expiration of the fixed-term contract; 981 persons – in search of a first job; 741 unemployed – due to downsizing or enterprise bankruptcy. In parallel, 7,462 unemployed were excluded from the register of the Employment Service, including 5,420 people – for the employment or self-employment reasons.

In total, for 9 months of 2019, 74,448 unemployed persons were recorded in the register of the Employment Service – 5.7% less than in the same period of 2018. Of these, 51,380 individuals were registered for the first time, which is 4.1% less than in the same period in 2018. During the 9 months of 2019, 44,530 people were employed.

As compared to August 2019, the unemployment rate has decreased in all territorial offices of the Employment Service. The most significant decrease is noted in Maribor (-3.9%), Velenje (-3.6%), Nova Gorica (-3.3%), Trbovlje (-2.6%) and Murska Sobota (-2.6%).

As compared to September 2018, Nova Gorica (-9.5%), Novo Mesto (-7.3%) and Trbovlje (-7%) are leaders in reducing the unemployment rate across the country.

In September 2019, employers opened 13,726 vacancies, which is 7.6% more than in August 2019, and 5.2% less than in September 2018. The majority of the vacancies are offered for maintenance personnel, such as cleaners, hospitality industry workers, hotel business, administrative institutions, as well as teachers and employees of higher educational institutions.

According to the Employment Service, as of July 2019, the total number of working people in Slovenia reached the figure of 893,760. In July 2019, the average unemployment rate in the country was 7.4% (6.6% among men, 8.5% among women). The highest unemployment rate was recorded in Murska Sobota – 11.8%, and the lowest figure was registered in Kranj – 4.9%.
