Slovenia inspired an Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship from the University of Saint Thomas in Minnesota (USA), Jay Ebben, to write a novel about his experiences of this amazing country. Jay together with his family first moved to Ljubljana in 2011. He had to spend five months in Slovenia under a Fulbright scholarship programme. Thus, the ‘Painted Hives’ novel appeared, in which the author shared his magical experiences gained in Slovenia. “The main message of the book is that a dream doesn’t need to come true for it to be worth pursuing. In fact, sometimes it is better when things don’t go as desired,” says Jay Ebben. The author has chosen hives as a metaphor for the novel title because Slovenia is the place where he was first introduced to beekeeping. Ever since, Jay has been fascinated with bees and the Slovenian beekeeping culture. Therefore, he tried to use this theme as the main part of his book. In his novel, Jay Ebben explains that being a leader on environmental initiatives makes sense for Slovenia, and beekeeping is just another good example of entrepreneurial infrastructure that has been developed in this country significantly.
