Salonit Anhovo, a Slovenian manufacturer of cement, received the bronze Sustainable Energy Award from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for its achievements in this industry sector. The Company had made a significant progress in transforming solid non-hazardous waste into a sustainable source of energy. Salonit is currently conducting a series of tests to enlarge the share of used alternative fuels by 15% up to 75%. However, the quantity of alternative fuels should remain the same as indicated in the Company’s environmental permit issued in 2007. Thus, Salonit will manage to decrease its annual emissions of CO2 by 10,000 tonnes. The cement producer plans to reach a new figure of 0.737 kilograms of CO2 emissions per a kilogram of cement clinker. The new emission rate of the Anhovo production plant will lie considerably below the current EU standards. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has already supported Salonit by backing its investment with a loan for 15 million euros.
